What Is Short Track Derby?

Short track derby is a form of roller derby played on a flat surface, using a slightly smaller track than traditional flat track derby. This makes it easier to set up in various venues, from community centres to sports halls. The game features two teams of four players each, skating around the track in a series of short bouts called jams.

Each team has one jammer, who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team, and three blockers, who try to stop the opposing jammer while helping their own. The sport requires a mix of speed, agility, and tactical thinking. Players wear protective gear including helmets, knee pads, and wrist guards to stay safe during the physical contact.

The flat track format has helped roller derby grow worldwide, with leagues forming in cities large and small. It’s a sport that welcomes newcomers and veterans alike, with a strong emphasis on community and inclusivity.

Newcastle Roller Derby is trialling short track derby this weekend at Kahibah Public School Hall. It will see 2 of our dynamic home teams, the Harbour Hellcats take on the Fort Smashleys. Tickets available online and at the door. Doors open at 5:30 and first whistle will be at 6pm. Limited food and drinks available at the venue. No alcohol available for sale at the venue.
