🛼 Building Something Bigger: How Newcastle’s Home Teams Competition Came to Life

If you’ve spent any time in the Australian roller derby community, you’ll know it’s built on passion, volunteer power, and a whole lot of determination. Most leagues across the country are small, community‑run clubs — often without enough active skaters to field a full roster for tournaments or regular competition. It’s a challenge that limits game time, slows development, and makes it harder for new skaters to find their footing.
NRDL had a long history of running a well‑established Home Teams Competition with the Fort Smashleys and the Harbour Hellcats — a local, season‑long structure that gave skaters consistent gameplay without the cost and logistics of interstate travel. It’s been a core part of our league culture, helping skaters build confidence, strategy, teamwork, and resilience.
As the Australian derby landscape shifted — with many small leagues unable to field full teams for tournaments — it became clear we had something valuable to share.
So, we expanded our Home Teams Competition to three teams with the addition of the Bogey Rollers and opened the teams up to all derby skaters, not just NRDL members.
Now, skaters from small regional leagues, from newly graduated freshies, veterans stepping back from representative‑level derby, and everyone in between all have a place to play, learn, and grow. It’s also become a vital development space for referees and NSOs, giving officials regular opportunities to build skills, gain confidence, and progress through their own pathways.
None of this would be possible without the support of our sponsors, whose backing helps us run events, secure venues, and keep derby accessible for skaters and officials across the region.
Skaters and officials now travel from Coffs Harbour, Canberra, the Central Coast, the Hunter, and across eastern NSW because opportunities like this are rare — and the community it creates is worth the trip.
This week, two of the original Home Teams face off once again: Fort Smashleys vs Harbour Hellcats in Round 2 of the 2026 season, hosted at Kahibah Public School.
This season is bigger, louder, and more local than ever. Home Teams are here to stay.
